Silver Creek Community Library

The idea for the library originated in 2010 with the goal of creating a space that would serve both as a traditional library and a computer lab. The villagers came together to support this vision, providing free labor to erect a new building on an existing cement slab. Their cooperation and dedication were instrumental in bringing the project to life.

During this period, two Peace Corps volunteers, Ms. Elbena Casanetto and Mr. Greg Casanetto, assisted with the community development of the village. They discussed ways to equip the library with books and computers, and Mr. Greg Casanetto reached out to international partners, including Resource International and Teachers for a Better Belize (TFABB). Proposals were submitted, and positive responses resulted in donations of books, toys, furniture, and refurbished computers for the library.

Initially, due to limited funding, the library could not secure its own electricity. As a temporary solution, power was sourced from the community center, and internet access was provided by BTL. Once fully equipped, the library was ready to serve the community.

Ms. Romalda Choco currently serves as the Community Librarian. The library provides a wide range of services to the community, with its primary goal being to guarantee access to reading, learning, and self-development. Its services cater not only to the general public but also to students and teachers from local primary and high schools.

The library offers reference services, book loans, reading promotion activities, and programs that encourage the use of library resources. Patrons also have access to computers and can participate in book exchanges and other educational activities.

Throughout the year, the library hosts numerous programs such as Summer Programs, Reading Intervention, Doorstep Tales, and more. These initiatives have made the library a valued resource for students, adults, and the wider community.
