A reading competition geared at promoting literacy in the Cayo District concluded today.  Correspondent Fem Cruz has the story.

Fem Cruz, Cayo Correspondent: “Today 21 schools from all over the Cayo district participated in the 14th annual Category 1,2&_3 reading competition hosted by the Cayo Association of Principals of Primary Schools, CAPPS, and sponsored by the Belize National Library Service. Victor Pott the president of CAPPS gave us the final results.

Victor Pott, President, Cayo Association of Principals of Primary Schools: “The winners for category one Heidi Woodoy, United Evergreen Primary School; Alexandra Vernon, Shepherds Academy second place and third place Andres Campos, Howard Smith Nazarene School. From Category 2 we have Camile Seugura, St.Andrews Anglican School first place; second place Romeli Lopez from San Jose Succotz RC and Wilmer Marcos from United Pentecostal School. In category three we had Kathryn Velasquez, Faith Nazarene School first place; second place Victoria Vasquez, Our Lady of Guadalupe and third place Kelly Molina, Baptist Primary School. I would like to first of all thank the parents that were here motivating their children to read because reading is very important, we must motivate our children to read. If we want our children to do good in mathematics, science, social studies and language arts we must teach our children to read.”

Kathryn Velasquez, Student: “I am proud of myself because I just won first place at the reading contest Category 3 and first of all I want to say thanks to my supportive parents, my classmates, my family and also everyone present here supporting me.”
